The island of Fourni (Fournoi) is located just over hour away from Agios Kirikos, Ikaria by ferry, and under 1 hour by hydrofoil. Ferries make the 11 nautical mile journey daily from Agios Kirikos.
The name Fourni is typically used to describe a collection of three islets (including two which are inhabited: Fourni itself and Thymaina) and a further ten uninhabited rocky islands. Fourni is also under 5 miles from the large island of Samos (ferries from Karlovassi).
Thanks to its large and successful fishing fleet (the biggest in the Aegian), and direct car ferries to Athens (4 times per week, approx 10hrs), Fourni is thriving and has a stable population of around 1,500.
Things to See and Do on Fourni
Fourni is a popular destination for Greek day trippers – particular for Sunday lunches. Fourni is blessed with excellent tavernas with fresh fish, lobsters, and other shell fish in cheap abundance. In addition to Fourni’s town beach, just a 20 minute walk away is Kambi (Kampi) – a beautiful bay with a wonderful taverna. There are many secluded coves and bays for the more intrepid hiker wanting fine sand and crystal clear waters.
A rough road journey, four hour hike, or one hour boat-taxi ride away is Chryssomilia, the second largest settlement of Fourni. With amazing views of Samos and the Turkish coastline, and wonderful beaches, this beautiful village is well worth exploring.
